Other People's Windows

I don't believe people when they tell me they don't watch other people through their windows. Whenever we get into that conversation it soon turnes out that everybody knows what their neighbors look like, how many people live in an appartment, when they are at home etc. But the conclusions we make about their life seem to be much more dependent on the person watching, then on the people being observed. We need to know a lot about the context to really be able to understand what is going on. Visitors to exhibitions often told stories about what is going on in these photographs that were very different from each other proving, in fact, that they see what they already know.
